Earlier this month, the Culinary Arts Program at Utah Valley University held their K Competition for the culinary students. I was privileged to attend as photographer, and thanks to my husband who will soon graduate from the program, I had a chef's coat to wear which allowed me to be in the kitchen, right in the middle of all the action. Several exquisite plates were turned in to the judges, but I have to say my favorite part was watching the culinarians at work. The tension and adrenaline in the kitchen were almost tangible and were compounded by having the judges not only critiquing the dishes, but also scrutinizing preparation and technique. Add to all of that the pressure of having a lens breathing down your neck and you have one intense hour - to put it mildly.
The sights and smells of the kitchen were amazing, and I had to keep myself from openly drooling over those dishes. My objective in this series is to not just to present the plated dishes that were the culmination of the hard work of these students; I also wanted to display the elements of the kitchen. The metallic contrast of the steel and chrome, the bright colors of certain foods, the vast array of textures and ingredients that were often extremely different, but were artfully incorporated together to create a delectible and savory concoction. These "Glimpses" of the kitchen were what made this shoot interesting, unique and memorable.
Here is the competition through my eyes:
(For those of you students that would like copies of these and the other images burned to a CD, leave a comment or call/email me. CD's are $10 each.)
